Salad dressings can be some of the easiest things to make from scratch and, since I have yet to find a bottle of anything that even comes close to the fresh and flavorful dressings that can be whipped up at home in minutes, I take pride in keeping a jar of homemade dressing in the fridge at all times. Using ingredients like olive oil mayo (instead of the regular stuff) and buttermilk can keep dressings on the healthier side, so you’re not taking away all the good you’re doing by having a salad. And, if there’s a better way to get kids to eat raw veggies, I haven’t found it!
Ingredients:
– 6 oz of Olive Oil Mayonnaise
– 8 oz (or so) Buttermilk
– 1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
– 1/4 tsp garlic powder
– 1/4 tsp onion powder
– 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
– 1/4 tsp kosher salt
– 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
– 2 tsp finely chopped fresh parsley
– 2 tsp finely chopped fresh dill
How I make it:
– In a medium bowl, add mayo, lemon juice, and the rest of the herbs and seasonings.
– Whisk to combine, as you slowly pour in the buttermilk. You may want to add another ounce or so of buttermilk until the dressing reaches your preferred consistency.
– Taste and adjust seasoning, if needed (remember the onion powder and garlic powder will only fully developed after being hydrated by the dressing after a couple of hours).
– Whisk until completely smooth and serve immediately or transfer to a jar to keep in the fridge. (Shake before using)
Optional Ingredients/Substitutions:
– Substitute any fresh herbs for the parsley and dill.
– Substitute cayenne for spicy mustard powder.
Making your own ranch is not only better for you, it tastes so much better, and costs a fraction of the premade stuff that has all the strange ingredients on the shelf at the grocery store! Toss the bottle and grab your whisk!
